Sleep Under the Northern Lights at Finland’s Aurora Wilderness Camp

Aurora Wilderness Camp in Kilpisjarvi Finland

Travelers to the Arctic this winter have never been closer to the Northern Lights with the new glass roofed Aurora Wilderness Camp in Kilpisjärvi, Finland, launched this month by Arctic travel and Northern Lights specialists, Off the Map Travel.

The wilderness surrounding the Finnish village Kilpisjärvi is known for its remote and uninterrupted Arctic tundra. Away from any man-made light pollution, it is here that that the wilderness camp is placed for the winter, giving guests the best possible opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and simply enjoy the silence of the Arctic plains.

“This is no camp, it’s a true Arctic experience, and although you are out in the wilderness, you are far from roughing it,” says Jonny Cooper, Aurora travel expert and owner of Off the Map Travel. “The new Aurora wilderness camp is a combination of adventure and comfort. It allows those looking to completely escape from the modern world be with nature as they hunt for the Northern Lights from their bed.”

The new Aurora Wilderness camp is made up of two mobile sleeping huts which are placed in the best possible wilderness locations for the entire season, and once the winter ice has thawed they will be relocated. Each hut comfortably sleeps two. Most importantly, the roof of each huts is entirely see-through, allowing guests to lie back in bed and gaze out at the stars and (hopefully) the Northern Lights.

Situated 6km east from Kilpisjärvi, the Aurora Wilderness Camp huts will include gas stove, a super wide bed, table, heater, dry toilet, snowshoes, kick sleds, all adding to this glamping Arctic experience.

The experience starts at 6pm where an experienced guide will transport guests by snowmobile to the camp and show guests how everything works before teaching them how to make campfire and grill sausages. After the wilderness grill, guests will have the camp to themselves to hunt for the Northern Lights and enjoy the Arctic wilderness.

To fuel guests’ Northern Lights hunting, local snacks and hot drinks are provided for your evening at the camp, with a warming breakfast also included in the overnight experience.

“The adventure for this new experience starts the moment you leave for the camp, as you journey by snowmobile through the Arctic wilderness with an experienced guide who teaches you about the local area and how everything at the camp works,” adds Off the Map Travel’s Jonny Cooper. “You then have the wilderness camp to yourself, and as you are in one of the best places in Finland to experience the Northern Lights, it is recommended that you keep your eyes on the sky for the Aurora.”

Statistically, the Kilpisjärvi area has more clear night skies and records more Northern Lights activity than any other place in Finland. Experts have estimated that if the sky is clear visitors have more than a 70 percent chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
