Floating Beneath the Northern Lights

Taking a dip in a frozen lake is not the first experience that comes to mind on a luxury Northern Lights adventure, however Arctic travel experts, Off the Map Travel, have uncovered a new way to experience the Northern Lights in Finland where you do just that!

With your Arctic thermals keeping you warm, the new Aurora floating experience in Rovaniemi, Finland, then adds a head-to-toe high-quality rescue suit, allowing them to comfortably take a dip in the frozen lake prepared for the activity.

“The Arctic is one of the best places in the world to enjoy the night sky, and lying back in comfort of a rescue suit is a really special way to enjoy them,” says Jonny Cooper, founder of Off the Map Travel and Arctic travel expert. “Add to this the chance to look up at the Northern Lights, and this becomes a very special experience for anyone traveling to the region.”

This three-hour long experience starts at 7:30 in the evening, when the last hints of daylight have left the Arctic sky. Having slipped the dry rescue suit over your Arctic layers of clothing, it is time for the short walk onto the lake. Directed by candles, and your guide, it’s not long until you’re at the water’s edge and the neatly cut hole exposing the lakes 0-degree water for the Aurora floating experience.

As quickly as you slip into the water, your mind rests. Then it is just you and the night sky, floating comfortably on the water’s surface as you gaze at the stars waiting for the Sky to burst into color with the Aurora.

“Although the Aurora can never be guaranteed, this is an experience that puts you in the perfect position to gaze upon the sky to search for the Northern Lights,” adds Jonny Cooper of Off the Map Travel. “For some, experiencing the Northern Lights can be quite spiritual, especially once you learn of the many local myths and stories around the Aurora, and this new floating experience only amplifies this relationship with the night sky, and the Northern Lights, creating a new and powerful Aurora experience.”

Running daily from Monday to Saturday throughout the winter months from 18th November to 15th April, there is no special swimming skill required, but is only available to those over 120cm tall. The experience can be booked individually, or for small groups of up to 16 people.

As with any itinerary from Off the Map Travel, every itinerary can be tailor-made to fit the wishes and requirements of any guest. As an example, a 3-night, 4-day itinerary costs from £1289 per person based on two adults sharing a Double Suite on a half board basis at the amazing Arctic Treehouse Hotel. This includes transfers to and from Rovaniemi Airport and an amazing Aurora Floating Experience. Other activities are available on request. International flights are not included.
