High in the far north of the Indian sub-continent, in a landscape dominated by vast hills and snow-capped mountains, appear slithers of bright blue; Ladakh’s high-altitude lakes are peaceful sanctuaries among the rugged slopes, and help make this plateau one of the most picturesque on earth. This Summer, guests travelling with Shakti Himalaya can embrace lakeside living with a new 2-day extension to the signature Shakti Ladakh experience, at Tsomoriri Lake.
Tsomoriri Lake is the largest of India’s high-altitude lakes, fed with crystal clear water by local springs and snow-melt from the lofty Himalayan peaks; the lake is a sacred place of calm for many Ladakhis. During a two-night adventure, even further off the beaten track then the Shakti Himalaya ‘village house’ concept that includes hiking the Ladakhi hills, rafting the rivers and marveling at monasteries of the Indus valley – guests will travel to Tsomoriri Lake to disappear even further off grid and mix with the nomadic tribes that use the lake for water.
Settling into lake life, Shakti guests will spend time interacting with the population of Changpas (nomads) in the rural village of Korzok. This Tibetan nomadic people make the most of the surrounding pastures to herd precious pashmina goats and hardy sheep; guests can observe how the Changpa raise their livestock and work to produce beautiful carpets in the most basic of settings.
As with all Shakti walks, guests at Tsomoriri will be carefully guided to take in the majestic landscape and look back on the lake from a new perspective, with a picnic lunch along the way. Returning to camp in the afternoon, they can take it all in whilst sipping tea on the lakeshore, or perhaps test their hand at archery under expert guidance.
Accommodation is in a comfortable tented camp, spruced up by Shakti’s expert hosts; so expect freshly cooked meals magicked from humble fires, a cocooning atmosphere and plenty of compelling stories, wide smiles, star-filled skies and a sense of escape.
Shakti Himalaya’s signature ‘village house’ experience takes visitors to untouched villages in the Indus Valley. It is the perfect antidote to the frenetic world that most of us live in and can be completely tailored to suit the pace, fitness and aims of each individual. Now, with the addition of a visit to Tsomoriri Lake, travellers will be enchanted by the all-encompassing calm of this small fraction of the Himalayas, more than ever before.
Shakti Himalaya offers a 9-night programme from USD 9,202 / GBP 7,020 per person, including a 7-night Shakti Ladakh Village Walk experience and a 2 night camping experience at Tsomoriri Lake on a fully inclusive basis – including English speaking guide, private chef, support guide and porters, car at disposal and taxes, with transfers between Leh Airport and the village experience and return transfers to Tsomoriri.
