Make Sure You’re on the Right Path for Chile’s Total Solar Eclipse

Chile volcano

Next December, Chile will be in the path of a total solar eclipse and South America specialist Pura Aventura is introducing a new Chile Eclipse Explorer 2020 trip, offering a rare opportunity to experience this phenomenon in the heart of the country’s beautiful Lake District. Chile has some of the clearest skies in the world thanks to the low population density and the unpolluted skies over the Andes. The fact it sits so neatly on the pathway of the 2020 total solar eclipse means it provides the perfect chance to enjoy this extraordinary spectacle. But sky-gazers will need to act quick as accommodation on the eclipse route is limited.

Pura Aventura’s independent self-drive trip here focuses on the beautiful center, a land of volcanoes, monkey puzzle forests and vineyards. It takes guests from the clear blue lakes and fjords of the southern Lake District, to the snow-capped volcanoes and forests further north and onto the wineries of the Colchagua Valley.

The focal point of the trip, however, is the little-known Conguillío National Park, where visitors will join up with other Pura Aventura guests to witness the solar eclipse. Lying immediately to the north of the path of the total eclipse, Conguillío will enjoy 99.3% of the totality when it is scheduled for mid-afternoon on 14 December 2020. The group will hike up to the Sierra Nevada viewpoint (3 hours) for the best possible viewing position. While in Conguillío, guests stay in a collection of rustic cabins at the foot of the Llaima Volcano, their home for the next four nights, and from where there is a full program of activities available. Paddle on the lakes, hike to the summits, enjoy a spot of bird-watching, or try out biking, climbing, or fishing (payable locally).

Other highlights on this journey include: walking among the oldest trees on earth in the Alerce Andino National Park; visiting the wineries of the Colchagua Valley; and tucking into the seafood of the laid-back coastal town of Pichilemu, also a surfer’s paradise.

Price: Pura Aventura (pura-aventura.com, 01273 676712) offers the 12-day Chile Eclipse Explorer 2020 trip from £4,985pp based on 4 sharing, including 11 nights’ B&B accommodation, some meals, internal flights, private transfers, 4×4 car hire and some guiding.
